Winter suits fantastic cinema. Streets darken early, granite reflects the rain and a theatre door becomes an invitation to another world. Fantasporto has used that atmosphere since 1981, when Porto hosted its first international showcase of fantastic film.

The festival grew from Cinema Novo, a magazine created in 1978 to promote and study cinema. Although fantasy and horror remain central to its identity, Fantasporto reaches across genres, countries and new filmmakers. Its importance lies in the communal act of discovery.

For 2026, the 46th edition was scheduled from 27 February to 8 March at Batalha Centro de Cinema. Future editions will have different dates, so consult the official site before publishing or planning a trip.

Build an evening around one daring selection rather than only the most familiar title. Arrive early, read the director’s background and stay for discussions when offered.
