Lions commonly guard entrances or support balconies, carrying associations of courage, nobility and protection. Eagles suggest height, vision or imperial authority. Serpents can signal danger, healing, wisdom or renewal depending on context. Dragons are the most seductive: they may evoke vigilance and strength, but should not automatically be linked to one institution or legend.
Architectural animals became particularly expressive on nineteenth- and early twentieth-century façades, where owners used ornament to announce status, profession or aspiration. Commercial buildings might combine creatures with cornucopias and Mercury; residences might favour guardians.
