On the night of 23 June, Porto abandons the normal distinction between resident and visitor. Streets become dining rooms, dance floors and rivers of people moving downhill toward the Douro.
São João combines sacred and popular traditions. Basil pots carry playful verses, grilled sardines perfume the streets, illuminated balloons rise when conditions allow, and plastic hammers turn strangers into willing participants in a citywide joke. Fireworks provide the grand spectacle, but the true festival is the journey through neighbourhoods.
Eat before the densest crowds or reserve well ahead. Wear comfortable closed shoes, carry only what you need and agree on a meeting point. Public transport arrangements change, bridges or streets may close, and sky lanterns depend on safety restrictions. Consult official notices shortly before the event.
Many people continue from the centre toward Foz and watch morning arrive near the Atlantic. You do not have to complete the pilgrimage. The essential experience is to move slowly, accept the good humour and remember that residential streets are still home to somebody.
